Variability to the extreme in southwest Minnesota

Growing conditions have been extremely variable across Minnesota.

Craig LaVoi with Peterson Farms Seed covers the southwest part of the state.

“You can go from extreme drought where there isn’t a harvestable ear, to traveling a half hour and might run into some really good looking corn.”

And in some cases he tells Brownfield the crop might be better than expected.

“I predict there’s going to be fields where guys get out there and say ‘I don’t know where it came from.’ I think there’s going to be a fair amount of that, (but) on the other end obviously there are going to be some pretty poor fields.”

LaVoi says silage chopping is well underway and he expects corn and soybean harvest to begin earlier than normal because of how hot and dry this summer has been.
