USMEF identifies emerging Asia Pacific consumer trends

The U.S. Meat Export Federation is working to identify and market to emerging consumer trends in the Asia Pacific region.

USMEF Asia Pacific vice president Jihae Yang says consumers in Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines want more high-quality protein.

“It is proven that the market develops as disposable income increases and food culture diversifies (so) demand is shifting from the commodity grass-fed beef to the grain-fed beef.”

During the opening session of the USMEF Spring Conference in Minneapolis Wednesday, she said high-quality meat is not just being selected for an occasion, it’s becoming the center of the plate in daily meals.

Another emerging consumer trend is convenience.

“Beef and pork, as it is, (are a) proven choice of protein as compared to seafood because of the satisfaction of the meat dishes provide is exceptionally high, and meat is easy to prepare (and) easy to cook at home.”

And Yang says the younger generation seems to be more open to new cuisine.

“So it is important to increase the exposure of U.S. meat to this age group.”
