USMCA seen as “basis” of future U.S. trade agreements

An official with the U.S. Grains Council suggests the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement lays a solid foundation for future trade deals.

USGC director of strategic initiatives and engagement Melissa Kessler tells Brownfield USMCA is designed for the modern world of digital trade.

“E-certificates for certain things, adding in new dispute mechanisms, it’s the first trade agreement in the world to have a biotech chapter. USMCA in many ways is the basis of the future of trade agreements.”

She points out USMCA builds off the success of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

“Connecting the economies of Canada, Mexico, and the United States was very powerful to kind of building our trade alliances, but also kind of the modern system we have of producing and exporting grains.”

Mexico and Canada represent the two largest markets for refined corn products valued at more than $900 million annually.
