USDEC’s Vilsack remains optimistic about dairy exports

The President of the U.S. Dairy Export Council says there is good news when it comes to foreign trade.  Tom Vilsack says, “Dairy exports for the first six months of 2018 are the highest that they’ve ever been, so we obviously want to continue that momentum.”

When asked if the record pace was an effort by buyers to beat the deadline for new tariffs, Tom Vilsack says he doesn’t believe so.  “You know, I’d be inclined to think that that might be the case except that we saw record numbers in December, January, February, March, April, May, and now June so I think this is a pattern.”

Vilsack tells Brownfield USDEC’s Next Five Percent plan to increase exports is working.  “(We have) more people, newer partnerships, and better promotions.  We’ve been very aggressive.  Our processors and co-ops have been very aggressive in these markets and people around the world know the quality of the product that we’re selling.”

He says you can’t beat the quality, affordability, and a safe supply that is sustainably produced.

Vilsack is optimistic the European market can be opened up a bit more along with finalizing a new NAFTA deal.
