USDEC completes Japan, Hong Kong cheese mission

Four dairy farmers joined American artisan cheese producers on a trade mission to Japan and Hong Kong last week.  One of the farmers was Marilyn Hershey from Pennsylvania, who tells Brownfield U.S. dairy exports are seeing more opportunities in this region.  “Japan does bilateral agreements that are being worked on and so we do have some access in there, and Hong Kong has more access than mainland China.”

Hershey says they also met with nutrition educator and original Iron Chef Dr. Yukio Hattori.  “He said the next generation’s chefs, they want to use more cheese and they want to use the specialty cheeses.”

Hershey says there are also opportunities to expand whey protein concentrate sales as a Japanese fitness club chain puts more focus on nutrition.

The trip to Japan and Hong Kong was supported by the U.S. Dairy Export Council and funded by the dairy checkoff
