USDA supports new California milk marketing order

The USDA now supports creating a California federal milk marketing order to replace the state’s order.

The USDA’s Dana Coale tells Brownfield the order has the same formulas and product classifications as the 10 existing federal marketing orders.  If approved by California producers, she says, other dairy regions will also be impacted.  “In some areas such as the upper midwest, you will see an increase, a projected increase from the baseline.  In other areas, you may see a projected decrease from the baseline.”

The USDA’s decision will be published in the federal register February 14th.  The Agricultural Marketing Service will host a public meeting February 22nd in Clovis, California and will be open to participants online.  “Just as we did with the hearing, we will be webcasting the meeting and the meeting itself will transcribed.  All of the meeting contents will be made part of the evidentiary record of this proceeding.”

California dairy producers have used a state milk marketing order for many years, but say they’ve been underpaid by processors.  The state’s three biggest cooperatives– California Dairy Campaign, Milk Producers Council and Western United Dairymen—all support the change.
