USDA: spring wheat production up in 2020

The USDA says 2020 spring wheat production was 585.9 million bushels, up 24.805 million from 2019.

Farmers planted fewer acres in 2020, 12.250 million in 2020 versus 12.67 million in 2019, but harvested more, 12.06 million acres last year, up 435,000, and the U.S. average yield was a record high at 48.6 bushels per acre, an increase of 0.3 on the year.

The USDA’s prospective planting numbers are out March 31st.

Comparisons for Brownfield states:

Minnesota: 72.08 million bushels, compared to 79.8 million in 2019; average yield of 53 bushels per acre, compared to 57 a year ago; harvested area of 1.36 million acres, compared to 1.4 million last year

South Dakota: 35.72 million bushels, compared to 25.37 million in 2019; average yield of 47 bushels per acre, compared to 43 a year ago; harvested area of 760,000 acres, compared to 590,000 last year
