USDA sees higher planted area for corn, soybeans
The USDA is projecting increased planted acreage for a number of crops, including corn and soybeans, but that will depend on weather and other factors.
2020 corn acreage is estimated at 96.990 million acres, up 8% from 2019, which saw historic planting delays in many key U.S. growing areas because of extremely wet weather.
Soybeans are seen at 83.510 million acres, 10% higher than a year ago, which was also impacted by weather.
Planted area for all types of wheat is expected to be 44.665 million acres, 1% less than last year and, if realized, the lowest since 1919, when the USDA started keeping records on U.S. wheat acreage. That includes winter wheat area of 30.775 million acres and non-durum spring wheat acreage of 12.59 million, also 1% less than in 2019.
Upland cotton acreage is pegged at 13.4755 million acres, down less than 1% on the year, with rice at 2.847 million acres, a jump of 12%.
Harvested area for all types of hay is expected to be 53.283 million acres, 2% above 2019.
Sorghum acreage is projected at 5.820 million acres, 11% higher.
The USDA’s weekly national crop progress and condition reports resume Monday, April 6th.
