USDA sees bigger winter wheat crop

This year’s U.S. wheat crop should be larger than last year. The USDA projects all wheat production at 1.962 billion bushels, with winter wheat leading the way on expectations for a higher average yield to cancel out lower acreage totals. Spring wheat production is expected to be below a year ago, with lower acreage numbers and a steady average yield. The USDA says the numbers are tentative because of spring wheat harvest delays and quality concerns, along with a slow start to winter wheat planting.

All wheat is estimated at 1.962 billion bushels, compared to 1.885 billion in 2018, with an average yield of 51.6 bushels per acre, up 4 from the year ago total. Harvested area is expected to be 38.052 million acres, down more than 1.5 billion on the year. Winter wheat is pegged at 1.304 billion bushels, compared to 1.184 billion last year, with an average yield of 53.6 bushels per acre, compared to 47.9 in 2018, and harvested area of 24.327 million acres, compared to 24.742 million a year ago. Spring wheat is seen at 599.990 million bushels, compared to 623.232 million the year before, with the average yield unchanged at 48.3 bushels per acre and harvested area of 12.435 million acres, compared to 12.896 million last year.
