USDA reports mostly mild January for Iowa

January was a varied month for weather in Iowa.

The USDA says temperatures were mild for most of the month, aside from a brief drop below zero, with widespread snow and ice halting fieldwork, but some producers were able to till fields and continue late harvest activity.

The snow and ice also slowed down grain movement, while the fluctuating temperatures did increase the chance of health issues, but livestock conditions were called normal with some reports of calving.

Hay supplies in Iowa were adequate with producers using hay to supplement feed.

The USDA’s weekly national crop progress and condition reports resume in April.
