USDA reconfirms safety of pork from H1N1-infected pigs

The USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) has reconfirmed that pork from pigs exposed to the H1N1 virus is safe to eat.

New ARS research confirms that, while the virus can induce respiratory disease in hogs, there is no evidence of systemic infection that would contaminate the meat.

Researchers noted that sick hogs are not allowed entry into the U.S. food supply as per USDA FSIS criteria.  However, their findings do support the World Health Organization position that pork harvested from H1N1-infected hogs is safe to eat.
