USDA raises 2022 corn, soybean crop estimates

The USDA has increased projections for the 2022 U.S. corn and soybean crops.

As of November 1st, corn production is estimated at 13.93 billion bushels, with an average yield of 172.3 bushels per acre, both a bit higher than in October. Harvested area is seen at 80.844 million acres.

Soybeans are pegged at 4.346 billion bushels, 1% above a month ago with an average yield of 50.2 bushels per acre, fractionally more than last month. Harvested area is projected at 86.631 million acres.

These numbers will vary in between now and the final report in January, but corn and soybean production be lower than 2021 due to a decline in yield and changes in acreage. A year ago, corn production totaled 15.074 billion bushels with an average yield of 176.7 bushels per acre on harvested area of 85.318 million acres, while soybeans totaled 4.465 billion bushels with an average yield of 51.7 bushels per acre on harvested area of 86.312 million acres.

The USDA’s new crop U.S. corn ending stocks guess was up on the month with higher production canceling out increased feed use, while new domestic soybean ending stocks were above a month ago because of higher production against improved crush demand.

U.S. wheat ending stocks were down modestly from October on expectations for greater food use.

The USDA’s next set of supply, demand, and production numbers is out December 9th.
