USDA lowers corn, soybean crops, tightens ending stocks

The USDA has trimmed projections for 2020 U.S. corn and soybean production and ending stocks.

As of November 1st, corn is estimated at 14.507 billion bushels, down 1% from October, with an average yield of 175.8 bushels per acre, a decline of 2.6 on the month, with ending stocks of 1.702 billion bushels, a cut of 465 million on that lower production guess and strong export demand. Harvested area is seen at 82.527 million acres, steady with the previous estimate. In 2019, production was 13.62 billion bushels with an average yield of 167.5 bushels per acre and harvested area of 81.337 million acres.

Soybeans are pegged at 4.170 billion bushels, 2% less than last month, with an average yield of 50.7 bushels per acre, 1.2 lower than a month ago, with ending stocks of 190 million bushels, 100 million less than in October because of the reduced crop size, as exports were left unchanged. Harvested area is expected to be 82.289 million acres, steady on the month. Last year, the crop totaled 3.552 billion bushels with an average yield of 47.4 bushels per acre and harvested area of 74.939 million acres.

The USDA’s next set of supply, demand, and production estimates is out December 10th.
