USDA issues guidance notice on grass fed beef
The USDA Food Safety Inspection service has released a clarification to its “Grass Fed” label on beef.
The clarification states meat bearing the Grass Fed label must come from animals whose diet comes solely from grasses. Animals cannot be fed grain or grain by-products and must have continuous access to pasture during the growing season until slaughter.
Companies wishing to label their products as “Grass Fed” will need to provide a detailed written description explaining their process for ensuring that claim. Companies will also have to provide a signed and dated document describing the animals’ diet to ensure the claims are not false or misleading.
