USDA issues grants to processors to strengthen supply chains, expand processing

The USDA has awarded $32 million to meat and poultry slaughter and processing facilities to expand capacity and strengthen the U.S. food supply chain.

The grants, which were awarded to 167 facilities across the country including will help cover costs for improvements and serve more customers in more markets.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says the investments will help processors recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, pursue new market opportunities, and meet consumer and producer demand.

The agency says meat and poultry processing facilities will be able to expand existing facilities, modernize processing equipment and meet packing and food safety requirements needed to meet inspection standards to ship meat across state lines.
