USDA hikes sorghum production guess

The USDA has raised its sorghum production estimate after an increase in the planted area total.

This year’s sorghum crop is now expected to be 454.285 million bushels, up 44.9 million bushels from August following a 13% jump in the planted area total to 7.34 million acres, with an average yield of 69.7 bushels per acre, a month to month decline of 1.1 bushels, and harvested area of 6.52 million acres, also 13% higher than last month. That would be substantially larger than the 2020 crop as producers try to meet demand, especially export demand from China, which uses sorghum for livestock feed and beverage alcohol. 2020 U.S. production totaled 372.96 million bushels with an average yield of 73.2 bushels per acre, planted area of 5.88 million acres and harvested area of 5.095 million acres.

The USDA projects sorghum ending stocks at 32 million bushels, compared to 18 million last month and 13 million last marketing year, with that increase in production cancelling out a higher feed use guess. The average farm price is estimated at $5.85 per bushel, compared to $6.15 in August and $5.00 for 2020/21. The 2021/22 marketing year for sorghum started September 1st.

The USDA’s next set of supply, demand, and production estimates is out October 12th.
