USDA: “Double down the guard” on African Swine Fever

Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue has told the appropriate USDA agencies, “Double down the guard to keep African Swine Fever out of the United States.” The USDA has put restrictions on swine and pork imports from China and is working with the U.S. pork industry to tighten biosecurity. The disease is highly contagious between animals but not a threat to humans.

IF African Swine Fever gets into the U.S. Perdue says they’ll work quickly to stamp out the disease and eliminate it quickly. He says early detection and rapid testing will be crucial, “We’re working now to make sure that we’ve got adequate federal and state laboratory capacity to handle any of the testing needs that may occur.” Perdue says where ASF is concerned, the USDA is preparing for the worst and praying for the best.
