USDA cuts cotton crop guess slightly, raises rice

The USDA has made modest adjustments to its 2022 cotton and rice production estimates, with harvest for both crops ongoing.

As of October 1st, upland cotton production is projected at 13.344 billion bales, down less than one percent from September on a small cut to the average yield guess to 831 pounds per acre. Harvested area is estimated at 7.712 million acres. In 2021, upland cotton totaled 17.191 million bales with an average yield of 813 pounds per acre and harvested area of 10.149 million acres.

This year’s rice crop is pegged at 165.4 million hundredweight, up 297,000 on the month following a slight upward revision on yield. Harvested area is expected to be 2.177 million acres. A year ago, rice totaled 191.796 million hundredweight with an average yield of 7,709 pounds per acre and harvested area of 2.488 million acres.

The USDA’s ending stocks estimates for cotton and rice were above a month ago, with rice up on the increase in production and a cut in exports, and cotton higher on a lower export projection.

The USDA’s next set of supply, demand, and production numbers is out November 9th.
