USDA continues rural broadband expansion efforts

USDA Under Secretary Xochitl Torres Small says the agency is continuing its efforts to help connect farmers and ranchers with affordable, high-speed internet in 2023.

“Rural Development has a key role in that,” she said. “We received $2 billion out of the bipartisan infrastructure law. We were the first federal agency to get money out for fiber in the ground.”

She tells Brownfield USDA Rural Development has been partnering with local providers.

“There’s folks who know their customers and know where service doesn’t exist because their neighbors are knocking on their door,” Torres Small said. “We’re proud to be investing in those places.”

The USDA says enhancing digital agriculture technologies could create at least $47 billion yearly in additional gross benefit for the US economy.
