USDA: cheese, butter production up in August

The USDA says cheese production during August was 1.111 pounds, up 2.2% on the year. Italian type cheese production was 0.8% higher at 457.064 million pounds, while American type cheese production was up 5.1% on the year, also at 457.747 million pounds.

Butter production was 136.423 million pounds, a 2.1% year to year increase.

Nonfat dry milk for human consumption gained 2.5% to 132 million pounds and skim milk powder jumped 8.0% to 51.4 million.

Dry whey totaled 84.5 million pounds, a rise of 7.2%, while lactose for human and animal use fell 4.6% at 92.8 million and the total for whey protein concentrate declined 7.7% to 39.6 million pounds.

Regular hard ice cream production was 65.7 million gallons, down 6.4%, with the total for lowfat at 40.2 million gallons, 3.8% lower. Hard sherbet came out at 2.48 million gallons, a drop of 23.8%, and frozen yogurt totaled 3.79 million gallons, a decrease of 5.4%.

The USDA’s next set of supply and demand estimates is out October 10th.
