USDA ag price indices slightly lower in September

U.S. farmers made and paid fractionally less in September than they did in August.

The USDA says the index of prices received by producers 0.2% on the month, with losses in hogs, soybeans, broilers, and strawberries narrowly canceling out gains in cattle, market eggs, lettuce, and broccoli.

The dairy index for September was up 0.4% from August and 33.4% from September 2021, with an all milk price of $24.40 per hundredweight, a gain of a dime on the month and $6.10 on the year.

The index of prices paid was down 0.1% with decreases in cost for feeder pigs, gasoline, LP gas, and other services against increases in complete feeds, concentrates, and supplements.

Year-to-year, the USDA’s index of prices received was 21% higher and the index of prices paid was up 13%, with both at least somewhat reflective of improvements in the ag economy and general inflation.
