USDA adds category to Livestock Indemnity Program
USDA is adding an additional weight category to the Livestock Indemnity Program. The “over 400 pound” category will be split into two categories: “400 to 799 pounds” and “800 or more.”
The Ag Department says the change will ensure the right market value for non-adult beef cattle, dairy cattle and buffalo/beefalo. A new mortality rate will also be established for each of the categories.
Authorized by the 2008 Farm Bill, the Livestock Indemnity Program compensates owners and contract growers for livestock death losses in excess of normal mortality due to adverse weather, including losses due to hurricanes, floods, blizzards, disease, wildfires, extreme heat and extreme cold.
