USDA: 2019 winter wheat crop up 7% on year

The USDA estimates 2019 U.S. winter wheat production at 1.269 billion bushels, up 7% from 2018’s total of 1.184 billion.

The average yield is currently projected at 50.3 bushels per acre, up 2.4 on the year, but this set of numbers doesn’t fully take into account slower than average development and the wet conditions in parts of the eastern Midwest.

Hard red winter production is expected to be up 18% from last year at 780.375 million bushels, cancelling out a 7% decrease for soft red winter to 264.565 million and a 5% decline in white winter at 223.521 million bushels.

The USDA expects record low harvested area in Ohio and Virginia.

The current marketing year for wheat runs through the end of May.
