USDA 2019 corn, soybean totals show weather effects

The USDA says the 2019 U.S. corn and soybean crops were smaller than in 2018. Planted area was limited by historically wet weather in most of the Midwest and Plains, which was followed by highly variable conditions during the growing season and widespread harvest delays, which led the department to use estimated production and harvested area totals in several states for both corn and beans. That includes Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin for corn and Michigan, North Dakota, and Wisconsin for beans. The USDA will be resurveying producers in those states and if changes are made, the updated totals will be out in late spring.

The initial total for corn is 13.692 billion bushels, 5% less than the previous year, with an average yield of 168 bushels per acre, down 8.4 bushels, and a less than 1% increase in harvested area at 89.7 million acres.

Soybeans were reported at 3.558 billion bushels, a drop of 20%, with an average yield of 47.4 bushels per acre, more 3.2 bushels less than the year before, and a 14% decline in harvested area to 76.1 million acres.

Spring wheat production was 562.38 million bushels, also significantly smaller than in 2018, with an average yield of 48.2 bushels per acre, 0.1 lower, and harvested area of 11.66 million acres, compared to 12.896 million the prior year. All wheat production was 1.92 billion bushels with an average yield of 51.7 bushels per acre and harvested area of 37.162 million acres, compared to 1.885 billion bushels with an average yield of 47.6 bushels per acre and harvested area of 39.612 million acres in 2018.
