USDA: 2018 U.S. soybean acres top corn

U.S. producers planted more than 89 million acres each of corn and soybeans this year. That’s more than what the USDA was projecting in March, but down 1% from the 2017 totals. It’s also only the second time on record U.S. producers have planted more soybeans than corn, the last was 1983.

The USDA reported corn at 89.128 million acres, compared to 90.167 million last year, with planted area steady to lower in 31 of the 48 states used in the estimate, while soybean acreage was 89.557 million, compared to 90.142 million a year ago, with steady to lower planted area in 14 of the 31 surveyed states. The early harvested acreage number for corn is 81.77 million, compared to 82.703 million in 2017, with soybeans at 88.862 million acres, compared to 89.522 million last year.

Spring wheat acreage was up 20% on the year at 13.202 million acres, above all reported estimates, and while total wheat acreage was 4% higher than last year at 47.821 million, it’s still the second lowest on record in nearly a century. For 2017, spring wheat totaled 11.009 million acres, with all wheat at 46.012 million. Winter wheat planted area was 32.732 million acres, compared to 32.696 million a year ago. Durum is pegged at 1.887 million acres, compared to 2.307 million last year. Harvested area for all wheat is seen at 39.571 million acres, compared to 37.586 million in 2017, with winter wheat at 24.831 million, compared to 25.291 million a year ago, spring wheat at 12.899 million acres, compared to 10.159 million, and durum at 1.841 million acres, compared to 2.136 million last year.

The USDA’s next set of production estimates is out July 12th.
