USA Rice optimistic following the Phase One signing

Chairman of USA Rice and California farmer Charley Mathews, Jr. says the signing of the trade deal with China is good news for US rice producers.  “China is the largest producer or rice – but they’re also the largest importer,” he says.  “It doesn’t take much to make a huge difference for us.  We grow rice in six different states – all kinds of different rice and it’s a great opportunity for Chinese consumers to try American products and we think rice is a good fit for them.”

He tells Brownfield he hopes this is the start of a lengthy trading partnership.  “We want to see just a continued reliable relationship with the Chinese,” he says.  “This is kind of new to us.  These trade agreements aren’t guarantees of sales – but they are a guarantee of an opportunity, so it’s competitive in the world of rice.”

Mathews was among several members of different ag groups invited to the White House for the signing.
