Upcoming weather not favorable for corn progress

USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says the short term forecast across the central and eastern corn belt does not look favorable for farmers who have made rapid planting progress.

“We could see several days of rain accompanied by temperatures mainly in the 40’s and 50’s.”

He says chilly rainwater is not good for the germination and early development process.

“That can be detrimental to even emergence. It can lead to pockets of uneven development and emergence in the young crop, so it will be something we have to watch.”

He says in the central and eastern corn belt, Illinois has the most corn to look out for with about one-fifth of their corn planted over the last 10 days.
