University deans reach out on NAFTA renegotiations

More than 50 university deans have written to the U.S. leaders involved in upcoming NAFTA renegotiations asking them to preserve and expand ag trade with Canada and Mexico. The letter, from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, (APLU) says ag exports to those countries from the U.S. have increased four-fold since NAFTA was put in place and Canada and Mexico are the second and third largest global markets for U.S. ag exports. The renegotiation process begins tomorrow (Wednesday).

The letter says agricultural exports are critical to rural America and the whole country.  It is signed by the deans of 55 universities including:

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Purdue University (Indiana)

Iowa State University

University of Minnesota

Lincoln University (Jefferson City, Missouri)

University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The Ohio State University

University of Wisconsin-Madison
