Uncertainty over dicamba insurance coverage concerns applicators

Uncertainty over how insurance companies will handle dicamba liability insurance next year is a big concern for chemical applicators.

KJ Johnson is director of government and industry relations for the Illinois Fertilizer & Chemical Association (IFCA).

“With our insurance that we use, are they going to cover dicamba? I think they will, but the big question is, what will be the deductibles they’re going to have to pay if there is a claim,” Johnson says. “We’ve heard different rumors of ‘whatever you pay now, double or triple that’. Those are major concerns.”

Johnson says it’s a concern for farmers as well.

“I’m also a farmer. So with our private liability, what’s our blanket liability coverage going to look like next year. That’s still a question and I think a lot of insurance companies are still working that out right now.”

Johnson says the dicamba insurance questions will be a major focus of IFCA’s annual meeting in January. He says the group is also working to set up dicamba application training programs for this winter.
