Uncertain path for Cattle Price Discovery and Transparency Act

The Cattle Price Discovery and Transparency Act remains a top priority for producers at the Iowa Cattle Industry Leadership Summit.

Cora Fox, Director of Government Relations with the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, says the legislation has stalled in the lame duck session of Congress.

“Obviously with the new Congress coming in it will be interesting to see the direction it goes,” Fox said. “The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is still very committed to ensuring that we have minimum levels of cash trade to prevent further erosion of price discovery.”

She tells Brownfield the bill’s path forward is uncertain.

“It could go in a bundle of bills,” Fox said. “There are a few other bills out there that are related to the cattle industry that may make sense to team up with. You might also see it go through the farm bill. That’s all to be determined.”

Fox says the organization continues to push for market reform, mandating cattle are delivered within 14 days of a negotiated cash price.
