Ukrainian farmer hopeful for average harvest

As Russia continues its attack on Ukraine, a farmer in the central part of the country is waiting patiently to finish harvest.

Kees Huizinga says the ongoing war continues to slow food production across the country. “We were supposed to harvest corn close to Kyiv, but we can’t because these Iranian-made drones launched by Russia are flying over the corn fields we have to harvest for our cows.”

He says it has upended food and nutrition security. “Because of the war, 4 million children in Eastern Europe are back into poverty,” he said. “Most of the kids in Ukraine don’t go to school anymore because they are afraid of bombs dropping on their schools.”

Huizinga expects the crop to be average despite challenges stemming from Russia’s attack.

Huizinga is a Dutch farmer who has been farming in Ukraine for 20 years and raises dairy along with corn, wheat, and barley.

He spoke during the 2022 Borlaug Dialogue in Des Moines, Iowa.
