UK and US ag could benefit from new trade agreement

The United Kingdom has released its objectives for securing a free trade agreement with the United States which could benefit agricultural industries on both sides of the Atlantic.

UK officials say they are willing to negotiate on agricultural terms that have been restricted throughout the European Union as they look to secure bilateral trade deals following Brexit.

Objectives for the UK include upholding Sanitary and Phyto-Sanitary standards for public, animal, and plant health, including food safety.  They also want to sell more agri-food into the U.S. and reduce tariff rates.

U.S. trade officials are seeking increased market access for goods including ag, barriers removed on food and ag products, and increased trade on biotech developed products.

Current EU policies block most U.S. exports of beef, pork, and poultry.
