U.S. poultry headed back to China

U.S. poultry is officially back on the menu in China.

China’s Customs Ministry says restrictions on the import of U.S. poultry have been lifted effective immediately as Beijing tries to make up for the protein shortfall caused by African swine fever slashing domestic pork production.

The ban on U.S. poultry and egg imports was enacted in January 2015 due to an outbreak of avian influenza.

U.S. poultry groups say Chinese demand for chicken paws alone could be worth $1 billion annually, with the potential for another billion in other chicken products, $100 million for turkey and at least $60 million for breeding stock.

The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service recently amended the Federal Register to allow the import of poultry products from birds slaughtered by certified establishments in China.

Trade talks between the U.S. and China are ongoing.

  • I recently was told a story about a man that was bidding to buy a chicken . He won the bid with a dollar and half bid 1.50 . But he got 1000 chickens not just one chicken . This must have happened before China decided to buy U.S. chickens .
