U.S. pork industry waits for Prop 12 decision

It’s been one month since the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments on California’s Proposition 12 and the U.S. pork industry is waiting on the court’s decision. National Pork Producers Council Vice President of State and National Relations Cody McKinley says it’s not clear when the court will make a decision.

“We hope they rule in our favor and they are able to take this case and point out interstate commerce is important. What they’re doing in California is not right.”

Missouri Pork Association Executive Director Don Nikodim is anticipating more legal challenges if the court rules in favor of the National Pork Producers Council.

“It may get sent back to California for more court ongoing, but eventually, it will keep California from implying their will on producers from other states, we hope.”

McKinley and Nikodim were part of the 2022 Missouri Swine Institute happening on the state fairgrounds Wednesday.
