U.S. pig farmers take African Swine Fever threat seriously

African Swine Fever has the attention of U.S. pork producers.

Central Missouri pig farmer Russ Kremer calls the virus a serious threat to the U.S. pork supply.

“So we need to step up our efforts in biosecurity.”

China is in the midst of an African Swine Fever outbreak that began in August.

Kremer points out the Chinese produce many feed ingredients used in the U.S.

“Unfortunately, we do rely on micro-ingredients and even macro-ingredients that are coming in from various parts of the world.  We must be very careful about that.”

On his farm, Kremer has reduced the concentration of pigs to help mitigate the spread of diseases.
