U.S. oat production up sharply

U.S. oat production was up in 2022 with higher national planted area and better average yield following improved weather in the northern Plains.

The crop was reported at 57.655 million bushels, 45% larger than 2021, with an average yield of 64.8 bushels per acre, 3.5 higher.

Overall, planted area was up slightly, led by increases in the northern U.S. Plains, but with record low Wisconsin acreage, while harvested area was an all-time low for a few states, including Illinois and Ohio.

Even with record low planted area, the average yield for Wisconsin was the largest on record.

The USDA’s 2023 prospective planting numbers are out at the end of March.
