U.S. and Mexico trade relations improving ahead of NAFTA talks

A commodity group leader anxious about the renegotiation of NAFTA recently heard assurances trade relations with Mexico are improving.

Harold Wolle, president of the Minnesota Corn Growers Association, says Mexico’s Ambassador to the U.S. Geronimo Guitierrez spoke at Corn Congress last week.

“He says trade relations are better now (and) that Mexico was close to pulling out of NAFTA with dark consequences for both countries.  So I think we’re at the point now where we have positive relations between both countries.”

He tells Brownfield Guitierrez discussed a goal of the Mexican government that would benefit U.S. corn farmers.

“Mexico will import more ethanol in the future.  They’ve raised their blend rate, so they’re going to need more ethanol to meet that objective.”

Wolle says in conversations with other NCGA members during Corn Congress, there’s a consensus new Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue will play a vital role in NAFTA renegotiations, as well as other trade deals involving the U.S.

Formal NAFTA talks are expected to begin in mid-August.
