U.S. corn, soybean production down in 2022

U.S. corn and soybean production declined from 2021 to 2022. That followed year-to-year reductions in planted area, harvested area, and yield for corn, along with a lower soybean yield, which canceled out increases in acreage.

Corn was reported at 13.729 billion bushels, down 9% on the year, with an average yield of 173.3 bushels per acre, 3.4 below the year ago record, and cuts in acreage. U.S. planted area was 88.579 million acres while harvested area was 79.207 million acres. Record yields were recorded this year in several states, including Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

Soybeans were pegged at 4.276 billion bushels, 4% under last year, with an average yield of 49.5 bushels per acre, 2.2 less than the year before, negating higher acreage totals. U.S. soybean planted area was 87.45 million acres with harvested area of 86.336 million acres. The USDA says Ohio and Wisconsin had record large crops and Arkansas had a record high yield.

The numbers are likely to change somewhat later this year with some unharvested acres remaining in parts of the U.S.

The USDA’s 2023 prospective planting numbers are out in late March.
