U.S. and Kenya open trade talks

The U.S. and Kenya have officially launched trade agreement negotiations.  Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Kenya’s Secretary Betty Maina issued a joint statement saying the first round of talks will happen virtually during the next two weeks because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lighthizer says he looks forward to negotiating and concluding a comprehensive, high-standard agreement with Kenya that can serve as a model for additional agreements across Africa.   The U.S. and Kenya signed a memorandum of understanding two years ago, and the two countries say they’re working towards a comprehensive trade deal that makes workers, farmers, and business people in both countries more prosperous.
