Tyson moves to ban ractopamine in hogs

Tyson Foods says it will prohibit the use of ractopamine in the market hogs it buys from farmers beginning in February 2020.  In a statement released Thursday, Tyson says they are making the move to help meet growing global demand for pork.

Ractopamine is not allowed in some countries that are potential export markets for the U.S. including China

Tyson Fresh Meats President Steve Stouffer says the move should allow their nearly 2,000 independent farmers the ability to compete more effectively for export opportunities.

Tyson has been offering a limited amount of ractopamine-free pork to export customers by segregating the animals and products at processing plants. The company says these programs no longer adequately meet growing global demand.

Farmers have until February 4, 2020, to meet the new requirement.
