Tyson chairman warns of food shortage as supply chain is pressured

Tyson Foods is warning consumers a meat shortage could be coming as the industry continues to face processing plant shutdowns due to COVID-19.  In a full-page ad that ran on Sunday, in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, chairman of the board John Tyson said “the food supply chain is breaking” and millions of pounds of meat will disappear from the supply chain.  He says supplies of their products would be limited until processing facilities that are currently closed are able to reopen.

The company says food waste is also a threat as farmers across the country are forced to make the difficult decision to depopulate livestock because of the closures.

Tyson has not yet responded to Brownfield’s request for comment.
