Trump tells Congress he’s ready to sign deal with Japan

President Trump has notified Congress he’ll be using his Trade Promotion Authority to initiate a trade agreement with Japan.

Trump says he’s pleased with the preliminary terms regarding tariff barriers and intends to formally enter into the deal in the coming weeks.

The President could be eyeing an announcement at the end of this month when he and Japanese President Abe (ah-bay) are both in New York for the United Nations assembly.

Minnesota Pork Producers CEO David Preisler was recently on a trade mission to Japan and tells Brownfield the agreement should put the U.S. on a level playing field with members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans Pacific Partnership.

“Right now, all those competitors enjoy a tariff rate advantage over the U.S. And what we would get out of the new agreement is an equalization of tariffs.”

Trump’s notice also said his Administration looks forward to continued collaboration with Congress on further negotiations with Japan to eventually achieve a comprehensive trade agreement that results in more fair and reciprocal trade between the U.S. and Japan.
