Trump says no promise was made to withhold new tariffs

Chinese media is reporting the U.S. and China have agreed to a tentative truce in the trade war to resume talks at the G20 Summit, but Trump told reporters in Japan there is no truce.  Trump says he has not promised China he would withhold new tariffs for six months.

Trump recently told Fox Business the next phase of tariffs might only be 10% instead of 25%, but there’s no decision to implement new tariffs now.

When asked by reporters if Chinese President Xi Jinping (she jin ping) was going to put a trade offer on the table during Saturday’s meeting, Trump said the meeting will be productive and “we’ll see what happens and what comes out of it.”

One of the four general sessions of the G20 has finished, with a focus on the digital economy and the World Trade Organization.  A senior White House official told reporters world leaders support WTO reform and the U.S. is glad to see countries are taking that seriously.
