Trump, Lighthizer preparing for more tariffs on China

The U.S. Trade Representative is he preparing to follow through with increasing tariffs on Chinese goods.

USTR General Counsel Stephen Vaughn told reporters China continues to treat the U.S. unfairly.  “The President has asked us to look into whether or not we may need to cover a comparable percentage of Chinese imports in order to get them to change their behavior.”

Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer says the administration has been clear about the changes China should undertake, but says they have illegally retaliated against U.S. workers, farmers, ranchers, and businesses.

Lighthizer says President Trump directed him to consider increasing duties from 10 up to 25 percent on Chinese items under tariff restrictions since mid-July.   Another 16-billion dollars’ worth of goods identified earlier this summer would also face tariffs.

Written comments on the proposed additional tariffs will be accepted until September 5th and a three-day public hearing starts August 20th.
