Trump dangles threat of more China tariffs

President Trump is dangling the threat of more tariffs on Chinese goods as U.S. groups warn him not to. A letter from the National Retailers Federation and more than 100 other groups says escalating a “tit-for-tat” trade war with China would only increase the harm to more U.S. economic interests including farmers, families, businesses and workers.

The groups say they support the administration’s efforts to deal with the longstanding issues in China that have negatively impacted many U.S. companies but binding, long-term solutions must be negotiated because “high levels of tariffs on Chinese products will continue to miss the mark.”

The public comment period on an additional $200-billion-dollars-worth of import tariffs ended last week and Trump said on Friday those could take place very soon.

Trump said behind that, there’s another $267 billion ready to go on short notice if he wants and that “totally changes the equation.”
