Trucks beginning to roll into Illinois grain elevators

The manager of a central Illinois grain elevator says trucks are just starting to roll in with harvested corn.

Mark Heil is with Prairie Central Cooperative, which has 13 grain elevators in Livingston and McClean counties.

“We’ve handled maybe less than 5% of our corn harvest, so we are just getting started. I think some farmers are going to wait until October to get going.”

He tells Brownfield famers in the area had a good growing season overall and while tip-back is a concern, the crop appears to have finished strong.

“Comparing back to last year’s harvest, I don’t think we will reach that overall volume but maybe we will be surprised.”

He says the corn they have received so far is averaging 24-25% moisture and yields are good, some better than expected.
