Treasury Secretary nominee outlines priorities

Treasury Secretary nominee Janet Yellen told the Senate Finance Committee during her hearing Tuesday that China and the climate are top priorities.

But she says right now the focus is to provide COVID-19 relief to individuals and businesses.

During the hearing, Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley highlighted the importance of international trade for agriculture. Grassley says he will make sure the Biden administration does not overlook the importance of agriculture and the interests of rural America.

Yellen says America’s top agricultural trade partner in 2020, China, has been committing “abusive, unfair and illegal practices” which need to be taken on. She says the incoming administration is prepared to use the “full array” their tools to do so.

Yellen would be the first woman to serve as Treasury Secretary if appointed.
