Top-end yield lost on Eastern Iowa farm

Harvest is underway for Iowa farmer Dave Walton.

“Yield is down and probably 10% from average, which is about what I expected it to be. We’re in a in that part of Iowa and the East Central part that catches the area of drought that’s been hitting northeast Iowa up on up into Minnesota.”

He tells Brownfield corn yields are about what he expected considering the dryness, but he’s not sure about soybeans. “No soybeans harvested yet, but I think we’re going to get into those next week.”

Walton says there was a brief weather delay this week and more could be on its way. “We are scheduled to get some rain today and then again over the weekend, so we’re just recharging the soil for next year. It’s too late to do anything for us now.”

He says the last measurable rain fell about six weeks ago.
