“Timely rains” might be understatement in Iowa

Weekend rain snapped a long stretch of dryness for many Iowa counties.

Channel agronomist Matt Nelson covers the central part of the state.

“It was a really terrific rainfall, one that kind of sat and parked and brought rain over two or maybe even three days depending on where you were at.”

He tells Brownfield three quarters of the state probably received close to enough moisture to finish out grain fill and rejuvenate soybeans.

“I think there were spots in northwest Iowa that got 5+ inches, and as dry as we were I’d imagine that moisture got soaked up pretty quickly. The question is how much damage did the stress of these last three weeks put on this crop before we received the rain.”

Nelson says the Cedar Rapids area in eastern Iowa has been extremely dry and unfortunately did not catch much rain over the weekend.
