Timeline for de-listing wolf still gray

Livestock producers remain unsure of when the gray wolf might be removed from the Endangered Species List despite the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service taking formal action to delist the animal.

Ashley Kohls with the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association says she anticipates litigation from those who oppose taking away federal protections for gray wolves in the lower 48 states.

“So what that ends up looking like will actually kind of tell the tale of how long it’s going to take.”

She points out the official rulemaking process for de-listing the wolf has yet to begin.

“It’s not been posted in the Federal Register. We’re anticipating that next week, and that will kind of start the timeline for this.”

Kohls tells Brownfield the gray wolf can be successfully removed from the Endangered Species List either through the Department of Interior, which began under the Obama Administration, or by Congressional action.
